Understanding the SMYS Technical Training Program

SMYS Parents (all Program Levels; Recreation, RecPlus and SMU Travel),

I wanted to send out a broadcast email to you all so that you understand how the new SMYS Technical Training Program works, so you know when your son and/or daughter are eligible to participate. This program replaces the old Player Development Nights (PDN), expands Goalkeeper Training and adds Fitness & Agility Training.

The SMYS Technical Training Program has three (3) separate components;
1. Soccer Technical Training (schedule:
http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/index_E.html)
2. Fitness & Agility Training (schedule: http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/fitagil/index_E.html)
Eligibility for the Soccer Portion of Technical Training:
1. SMU Travel Players in age groups U9 – U14 are eligible to participate in any of the soccer portions they choose to participate in (as scheduled for Travel ONLY sessions).
2. SMYS RecPlus Players in age groups U8 – U14 are eligible to participate in any of the soccer portions they choose to participate in (as scheduled for RecPlus ONLY sessions).
3. SMYS Rec Players in age groups U8 – U18 are eligible to participate in any of the soccer portions they choose to participate in (as scheduled for REC ONLY sessions).

Players CANNOT attend sessions that cross programs (another words, a REC player cannot go to RecPlus Technical Training, a RecPlus player cannot go to a Travel Technical Training). This will be strictly adhered to!

Eligibility for the Fitness & Agility Training Portion of Technical Training:
1. SMU Travel Players in age groups as assigned in the detailed schedule are expected to participate. Schedule here:
http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/index_E.html
2. SMYS RecPlus Players in age groups as assigned in the detailed schedule are encouraged to participate. Schedule here: http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/fitagil/index_E.html
3. SMYS Rec Players in age groups as assigned in the detailed schedule are encouraged to participate. Schedule here: http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/fitagil/index_E.html

Players can ONLY attend sessions that their program (REC, RecPlus, or Travel) are assigned to, specifically by age group and gender as noted in the schedule. This will be strictly adhered to!
Eligibility for the Goalkeeper Training Portion of Technical Training:
1. SMU Travel Players in age groups as assigned in the detailed schedule are expected to participate. Schedule here:
http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/keeper/index_E.html
2. SMYS RecPlus Players in age groups as assigned in the detailed schedule are encouraged to participate. Schedule here: http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/keeper/index_E.html
3. SMYS Rec Players in age groups as assigned in the detailed schedule are encouraged to participate. Schedule here: http://www.stmaryssoccer.org/techtrain/keeper/index_E.html
Very Important Note: SMYS Rec players must also contact SMYS Goalkeeper Coach Andy Gretton in advance to ensure he is not overbooked for a session (since there are so many Rec players). This requirement is detailed below and on the Goalkeeper Training Page. Questions specific to Recreational Player GK Training should be directed to GK Andy Gretton.
SMYS Recreation Goalkeeper Training
Coaches and parents of Goalkeepers in SMYS Recreation Program do need to coordinate directly with Coach Andy Gretton on which nights to attend. The Recreation Program has 10 of the 30 goalkeeper training sessions and Coach Gretton will assign your son or daughter to come to a specific session(s) within the seasonal training schedule (see the detailed schedule).
The reason for this process with the Recreation Goalkeepers is we want the training sessions to be of good quality, so we need to control the number of players at each session so that Coach Gretton is not overwhelmed with too many players to train each session. We prefer quality over quantity.

Recreation GK parents should contact Coach Gretton at grettongoalkeeping@gmail.com to reserve spots on your designated training nights (see the detailed schedule).

In closing, if you have any questions regarding the SMYS Technical Training Program, please feel free to contact me via email:
smysdoc@md.metrocast.net.

Thank you,
Steve Senna, SMYS Director of Coaching
