St. Mary’s Youth Soccer has designated Lillian Grace Smith as the beneficiary of the second annual Claire’s Cup Tournament. Lily was diagnosed at the age of five months with Krabbe disease, one of a group of genetic disorders called the “leukodystrophies.” These disorders impair the growth or development of the myelin sheath, the fatty covering that acts as an insulator around nerve fibers and cause severe deterioration of mental and motor skills, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Krabbe disease is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme galactocerebrosidase, or GALC.
The Claire’s Cup tournament was started in November 2011, by St. Mary’s Youth Soccer in honor of Claire Broadhead. Claire was diagnosed in September of that year with leukemia. Claire recently celebrated her one year anniversary of survivorship and SMYS is anxious to have her back on the playing field very soon!
Claire’s Cup will be held at Chancellor’s Run Regional Park on Friday, November 16th from 6:00 – 10:00 pm and will feature teams that consist of Under-18 players (U18) and Adults. U18s will play vs. other U18s and adults will play against adults.
Please note: All Claire’s Cup teams must have at least one female on the roster. At least one female must play on the field at all times. Other than that, all rules apply that are used for Kohl’s Cup.
